Corporate Eyecare

Employers have a legal obligation to provide eye care to employees. This obligation derives from European Directive 90/270/EE and is encapsulated in the Health & Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations 1992.

The obligation on all employers can be summarised as follows:

  • Where a person is an employee who is, or is to become, a habitual display screen user his employer shall ensure that he is provided at his request, whenever requested, with an appropriate eye and eyesight examination to be carried out by a qualified Optometrist.
  • There is no legal limit to the number of examinations.
  • Following an examination, if an optical appliance (spectacles) is required to alleviate symptoms, then the cost of the optical appliance is the responsibility of the employer.
  • There is no legal limit to the number of optical appliances supplied providing each has a different specification.
